What is Battery?

The Battery Regulation (EU 2023/1542) establishes comprehensive requirements for batteries throughout their lifecycle — from design and production to collection, recycling, and repurposing. It introduces mandatory due diligence obligations for the battery supply chain, carbon footprint declarations, recycled content requirements, and a digital battery passport.

02 · SECTION

Who does it apply to?

All economic operators placing batteries on the EU market — manufacturers, importers, and distributors. Applies to all battery categories: portable, light means of transport, automotive, industrial, and electric vehicle batteries. Non-EU manufacturers supplying to EU customers are indirectly affected.

03 · SECTION

Key requirements

Due diligence obligations require mapping battery supply chains for responsible sourcing of cobalt, natural graphite, lithium, and nickel. Carbon footprint declarations are required from 2025. Minimum recycled content requirements phase in from 2027-2031. A digital battery passport is required for EV batteries from 2027.
