Ecodesign & Digital Product Passport

The obligated actor is fixed per product group by its delegated act, so for most groups it is not yet settled. Where your supplier is outside the EU, it is likely to be you.

FALLS ONSUPPLIERBUYER

Who this falls on depends on your product group’s delegated act. Most do not exist yet.

THE OFFICIAL ARTIFACT

What the supplier must actually produce.

Not a marketing datasheet. A registered passport, reachable by a data carrier on the product, carrying the fields the delegated act names.

WHO SIGNS IT OFF
The passport is reached by QR; the identifier registers in the Commission’s DPP registry. Conformity runs through ecodesign technical documentation, the declaration of conformity and CE.

THE CHARACTERISTIC FAILURE

A product datasheet arrives, and it lists sustainability figures.

There is no settled artifact yet for most product groups. What arrives now is whatever the supplier already had.

WHAT USUALLY ARRIVESINSUFFICIENT
Sustainability datasheet
MARKETING PDF · SELECTED METRICS · NO DATA CARRIER
Accurate figures, attractively presented
Fields chosen by the manufacturer, not by the act
Not registered, not machine-readable, no carrier on the product
NOT SUFFICIENT
Good product information that is not a passport. ESPR requires specific fields, a registry entry, and a carrier on the product itself.
WHAT THE REGULATION NAMESSUFFICIENT
Registered digital product passport
PER DELEGATED ACT · EU DPP REGISTRY · CARRIER ATTACHED
Exactly the fields the product-group act names
Registered, with a unique identifier
Reachable by QR from the product itself
SUFFICIENT
Same product, same data — structured and registered the way the regulation requires.

First product delegated acts

No obligation yet. The working plan names the first product groups — steel, textiles, furniture — and the digital product passport arrives with each delegated act, not before.
